Child Impact
Impact Stories
Zulpha came to us at an unknown age, abandoned, living on the streets with her mother, surviving on scraps from restaurants. Often left alone through the night, she was too weak to crawl or stand due to severe malnutrition. Restaurant staff, moved by her desperate situation, alerted authorities, leading her to our care. Our dedicated housemothers nurtured her fragile body, massaging her limbs, feeding her in small, steady amounts, and teaching her to crawl and walk.
As her health improved, she blossomed into a bright, confident girl, excelling in school and leaving behind the trauma of her past. In late 2019, we found an Aunt who had no idea what had happened to her. Secure and able to provide for her, she welcomed Zulpha to her home in early 2020. Zulpha became the first child we successfully reunited with family—a milestone in our mission to reconnect every child with their roots.
Hamisi arrived in May 2024, weighing only 5kg at five years old—his tiny body reflecting the severe neglect, starvation, and lack of care he was subject to. Unable to talk, crawl, or even hold himself up, he struggled to breathe due to a chronic nasal condition. His elderly grandparents, devastated by his condition, alerted the authorities, and we rushed him to the hospital, fearing he wouldn’t survive. After stabilising, after some months, he underwent surgery in August to help him breathe.
Against all odds, Hamisi has fought through every challenge, becoming the light of Umoja, adored by his housemothers and new siblings. Though he continues to battle health issues and has been diagnosed with mild cerebral palsy, his progress is remarkable. His grandparents, along with the hospital staff who first treated him, can hardly believe the transformation. Hamisi’s journey is a powerful testament to the life-saving love and care he receives every day.
