Umoja Orphanage Kenya

Meet the woman
behind the dream

Cathy Booth, the founder of Umoja Orphanage Kenya is an Australian mother, grandmother, teacher (now retired), and avid traveller. Learn why she felt so driven to start Umoja Orphanage Kenya in 2011.

Why
Every child deserves love, safety, and the chance to reach their potential. In Kenya, countless children face abandonment, abject poverty, chronic neglect, and lack of opportunity. Umoja Orphanage Kenya was born out of a desire to address these issues head-on.  Understand why we are focused on helping in Kenya.

Who

At Umoja Orphanage Kenya, we are a dedicated team of compassionate individuals driven by a shared dream to transform the lives of orphaned and vulnerable children. But there is so much more to our story.

Where

Umoja is surrounded by the stunning beauty of Kenya’s landscape, yet it exists in an area where challenges such as abject poverty and abandonment persist.  Nestled just inland from Kenya's breathtaking coast, our home is a haven of hope.  Discover where.

When
The Umoja journey began 14 years ago with a simple yet powerful vision: to offer a safe haven for children in desperate need. What started as an Australian dream has grown into a flourishing sanctuary on 15 acres of Kenyan land. There's a deeper story waiting to be discovered.
What

The Umoja Project shines in many ways from providing, love, care, shelter, education & healthcare for our children to running agricultural projects & employment for the local community. What we do reaches far beyond the surface.

How

Every action we take is underpinned by our unwavering belief that together, we can transform our children's lives. How do we make it all possible? Click to see the impactful ways Umoja is changing children’s lives."

In Kenya, thousands of children wake up each day without the security of a home, access to education, or even their next meal. These children face unimaginable challenges, and their communities struggle with the effects of abject poverty and lack of resources. At Umoja Orphanage Kenya, we're changing that for orphaned, chronically neglected and abandoned children in our community.

What our volunteers to Umoja Orphanage Kenya
say about the project

GAYLE B

"If you are ever thinking of volunteering I cannot recommend this worthy organisation more. Fabulous people making a difference in young lives and building community connections."

WAYNE L

"The ability to give your time and energy to make a difference in the lives of the Children and the Staff at Umoja, has given us more joy, than we ever realised it would do. I can guarantee that you will not regret it and it will change your life. There is so much to do, so whatever your skills, you will be able to make a valuable contribution to this fantastic project."

JANELLE S

"Boy oh boy, did I get a good workout when providing free health services to the local impoverished communities! In fifty years of nursing I constantly sought fulfilment and personal satisfaction, having volunteered previously in both Vietnam and the Philippines, but nothing I did before retirement compared with the enormous satisfaction I felt doing those clinics at Umoja."

IAN R

"One of my best experiences in my 45 years of Rotary International Membership and volunteering."
